January 20, 1898 in Forreston, Ogle, Illinois he married Henrietta "Etta" Gerjirts. She is buried in the White Oak Cemetery in Illinois. His name is on the headstone but he was living in South Dakota at the time of his death and was not buried in Illinois but buried in South Dakota. They had 10 children: Della, Tillie (died as baby), Mary, Henry, Hennrietta, Tillie (named after frist Tillie) John, Lena, Klaas, Frank. They farmed in the Forreston area and sometime around 1905 moved to South Dakota to farm.
