One week later that corps, named the Santa Clara Vanguard, would win its first parade (the San Francisco St. Patrick's Day Parade), and the corps would evolve into the single-most influential drum corps of the 1970s, pushing the boundaries of the music and visual captions.

In 1973, he led the Santa Clara Vanguard to its first World Championship victory.

Prior to the formation of DCI, under his leadership, the Santa Clara Vanguard were the 1970 American Legion National Champions, and were the 1971 VFW National Champions. The Santa Clara Vanguard then placed first at DCI World Championships in 1973, 1974, 1978, 1981 and 1989.
