Cortez was a land surveyor/civil engineer and real estate broker. When Cortez left Kentucky for Texas before 1880, Emerine was too young to marry. When they met again about 30 years later, they were surprised to find each other still unmarried. They were married in Dallas, TX on Jan. 14, 1910.
