Cyrus Flickinger one of our best known citizens and prominent farmers in this community, died Sunday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs Menno Weaver, southwest of Wakarusa. For several years he has been in failing health.
For more than 50 years he had been a pillar in the Holdeman Mennonite church and served as trustee and treasurer of the Holdeman congregation for about 40 years. He was always interested in the physical appearances of the property of the Church as well as her spiritual welfare. He kept his life in harmony with the quiet and noble teachings of that religion.
Born near Youngstown, Ohio, on August 29, 1853, he was the son of Jesse and Anna Aultman Flickinger. He came to this community with his parents at the age of 10 years and lived on the Eli Yoder farm southeast of Wakarusa.
On Feb 10, 1876, he married Margaret Holdeman and moved to a farm west of Wakarusa, which he had purchased and on which his grandson, Joe Brown, lives now. He lived there for five years before moving to the farm of Mrs Flickinger's parents, also west of Wakarusa. After the death of Mr and Mrs Holdeman, he bought the farm and lived there until his wife's death on Christmas, 1933.
Since her death he had made his home with his three children, Joseph, who lives on the Flickinger homestead, Mrs Ira (Anna) Brown, and Mrs Menno (Catharine) Weaver. A daughter, Alice, died on Sept 20, 1901, at the age of two years. He also leaves 21 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
As this long, useful, helpful life came peacefully to a close, we know this would be his parting exhortation to his family and to his friends:
"To so live that when our summons, too, shall come, we may gather at the River, and there meet with brothers, friends and neighbors, where the family circle will be reunited, where there will be no unfilled longings, nor an unavailing prayer, but where every heart will thrill with gladness and with eternal joy."
Funeral services were held at 9 am Tuesday at the Weaver home, with a service following at the Olive Mennonite church, north of Wakarusa. The Rev Jacob Bixler of Elkhart, had charge of the service, assisted by the Rev Silas Weldy of the Holdeman church. Text 1 Peter 1:3-5, burial in the Olive cemetery.
