Lawrence Ezra Mason was the second of eight children born to James Smith Mason and Dora Alice Payne Mason. His siblings were:

Clarence Erie Mason 1904–1971

Vera Novella Mason 1907–2012

Walter Arthur Mason 1910–1997

Benjamin Kenneth Mason 1913–

Zenice Estel Mason 1915–

James Stephen Mason 1918–2007

Neva Verlene Mason 1921–2009

By 1920, he and his family had moved from Oxford, Izard, Arkansas to Township15 in Kern County, California. In 1929, Ez married Opal May Smith and together they had two children, Bob and Betty. In the 1930 census, Ez was working as a laborer in the oilfields in Maricopa, Kern County, California.

In 1936, Ez and Opal divorced. Ez married Edna and had a daughter named Linda Joyce in 1939. In the 1940 census, Ez and his family were living in Alila, Tulare, California and he was working as a laborer. In addition to his daughter Linda Joyce, Ez and Edna had two sons, Lawrence and Ronald.

On August 25, 1957, Ez proudly walked his daughter down the aisle to be united in holy matrimony to Leland Yeoman. She was 18 years old and a graduate of Lodi Academy. Tragically on 11-3-1958, she lost her life in a traffic accident in Yucaipa, leaving her husband, father Ez and her mother Edna to mourn her.

Ez and Edna continued to live in Stockton, California, until his death in Manteca, California.
