William was born in Burke County, NC on the 25th of December, 1821. He married Miss Irene; youngest daughter of elder Thomas Carleton (with whom elder Abernathy labored for many years) on July 27th, 1853. He joined the Church at Saint John's, Sept 1866; was licensed to preach Dec 1, 1866, Ordained August 10, 1867 (at St. Paul's Church)
