William Abernethy spent some years of his life following in the footsteps of his father in the ministry and was instrumental probably in the constituting of a new church in Burke County around 1868 named Alexander, apparently after his father. Two writers of Baptist Associations histories wrote of William - Deacon John R. Logan, in his histories of Kings Mountain and Broad River Associations in 1887, and Major William A. Graham, in his history of the South Fork Association in 1901.
