Mrs. Mattie Brinkley, 77, widow of Calvin Brinkley, 1670 Gallia st, passed away at 2:05 p.m. Friday in Portsmouth General hospital. Mrs. Brinkley had been in failing health the last three years and three weeks ago suffered a fractured hip in a fall in her home.
Born March 18, 1868, in Smith(sic) co, Va., Mrs. Brinkley was a daughter of John and Catherine Meyers. She was married 63 years ago to Mr. Brinkley, who preceded her in death in January 1932. Since her husband's death she had resided with her children. She came to Portsmouth three years ago and while living here stayed with her son and daughter E. M. (Mack) and Clara Brinkley.
Mrs. Brinkley was the mother of 12 children, three of whom are deceased, W. W., Eugene and Virginia.
Surviving are the following sons and daughters, E. M., Clara, Harry and C. W. Jr. of Portsmouth, R. E. and W. B. of Columbus, Mrs. Mattie Beloat of Kenova, Mrs. R. H. Keyes of Sardinia and Mrs. Kate French of Bluefield.
Other survivors include a twin sister, Mrs. Betty Vernon of Marion, Va., another sister, Mrs. Mary Tilton of Roanoke; 30 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Six of the grandchildren are in service.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Windel-Holand funeral home with Rev. Hollie Conley in charge. Burial will follow in Memorial Park cemetery. The body will be at the residence until 1 p.m. Sunday.
