Mrs. Addie Bowen Death

Addie Elizabeth Mercer Bown [Bowen] was born April 9, 1868 , to Dora and James Mercer in the township of Rock Elm Pierce County, Wis. one fourth mile south of the village of Waverly, where she grew to young woman hood.

She attended school in a small school house on Plum Creek where Highway 72 now is. Her only way of going to school was by a path that was blazed by cutting bark from trees by her father.

She was married to Geo. C. Bowen October 22, 1887 at Eau Galle, Wis. and they began house keeping on the farm with her parents, later building a home in Waverly, at which time it was a thriving little village with a veneering mill, hotel, blacksmith shop, post office, store and her husband's carpentery shop where he built wagons and sleighs. After a few years she moved to Spring Valley when it was a little village and she experienced the first flood, later moving back to the towship of Rock Elm where she and her husband farmed, retiring to the same home her husband had built after their marriage, remaining there until failing health in Nov. 1961 when she went to live with her daughter and family near Spring Valley [Wisconsin].

To this union were born, two children, one daughter, Alta Gamma, Spring Valley; one son Arnold of Waverly. She had been a faithful member of the Methodist Church of Ono and later years of the Methodist Church of Rock Elm.

She is also survived by three grandsons, Eldon Bowen of Waverly, LeRoy Bown [Bowen] of Prescott [Wisconsin] and Irvin Bowen of River Falls [Wisconsin]; one granddaughter, Anita, Mrs. Arley McClellan of Spring Valley; nine great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She had been a patient of the Spring Valley Nursing Home since January 1, 1964. On July 30 she was taken to Memorial Hospital, Menomonie [Wisconsin] shere she passed away August 31, 1964 at the age of 96 years, 4 months and 22 days.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 3, 1964 at the Rock Elm Methodist Church with Rev. Calmer officiating and Rev. C.R. Gaylord of Spring Valley as guest pastor.

Mrs. Calmer Overlien and Mrs Herbert Husby sane, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Will there be any Stars in My Crown" with Mrs. Willard Holcomb at the organ.

Interment was in the Poplar Hill Cemetery, Rock Elm. Pallbearers were Clifford Arneson, Harlan McMahon, Carl Van, Shirley DeLong, George Schultz and Orvie Lansing.

Arrangements were by Geving and Keer Funeral Home, Spring Valley.
