George Clifford Bowen was born August 17, 1861, to Arnold and Mary Bowen in Pepin County, Wisconsin. Later he moved to Lake City, Minn., where he grew to manhood. Quite early in life he learned the carpenter trade, also moved buildings. At the time he made his home in Waverly [Wisconsin]. It will be remembered that he framed and helped to build the big saw-mill and the veneer mill at Waverly.

October 22, 1887 he married Addie Elizabeth Mercer. To this union two children were born: a daughter (Alta) Mrs. Carl Gamma of Spring Valley [Wisconsin]: and a son Arnold of Waverly. The first four years of their married life were spent at Waverly, then they moved to Spring Valley where there was quite a demand for carpenters, as the town was just in its infancy. He helped to build the Boss and Morris Hotels.

In 1895 he moved to Rock Elm, where he went into the carriage, wagon and sleigh business, later he started a meat market, then he sold his business and bought a farm in the town of Rock Elm. Twenty years ago he retired and returned to Waverly where he resided ever since.

Mr. Bowen was a member of the Ono M.E. church for many years.

October 22, 1937 was a great day in the lives of Mr. and Mrs. Bowen when it was their joy to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

Mr. Bowen had been in poor health the past four years. On Thursday afternoon he was taken to the Plum City Hospital where it was found that an operation was neccessary. He died Friday, January 10, [1947] at the age of 85 years four months and 25 days. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, two brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife and two children; two sisters, Mrs Hattie Dennen, of La Crosse, Wis. and Mrs. Jessie Mackegon of Candon, Ore. Also four grand children and two great grand-children.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 14, from the house, followed by Church services at the Rock Elm M.E. Church, Rev. Arthur Gausmann officiating. Interment was made in Poplar Hill Cemetery at Rock Elm.
