Mrs. Fannie Ainge Dies

CHAUMONT – Mrs. Fannie S. George Ainge, 79, widow of Gilbert L. Ainge, died at 6 this morning in Madonna Home, Watertown, where she had lived since November, 1965.

The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Chaumont Presbyterian Church. Spring burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Surviving are three half-brothers, Emerich A. George, Chaumont, Dr. Wendell D. George, Point Salubrious, Dr. H. Louis George, Watertown, and nieces and nephews.

Born March 17, 1890, in Chaumont, a daughter of Henry L. and May B. Hills George, she attended Chaumont School and was graduated from Watertown High School in 1909. After attending Lake Erie College one year, she transferred to Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Mass., from which she was graduated in 1913.

She did research in genetics at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, for two years after graduation and then taught mathematics at Chaumont High School a year, at Watertown High School two years and in Ilion from 1918 to 1923.

On Aug. 11, 1923, she was married in the Chaumont Presbyterian Church by Rev. J. Canfield Van Doren of Rochester, her uncle, to Gilbert Ainge, whom she met in Ilion. They moved to San Francisco in 1926, and later to Los Angeles, where Mr. Ainge was western manager of Remington Rand.

While living in Los Angeles, Mrs. Ainge was president of the Women’s Auxiliary of Babies Hospital and later treasurer and a member of the board of trustees of the hospital.

Mr. Ainge died in Los Angeles in 1942. Mrs. Ainge returned to Chaumont in 1954 and lived with her step-mother, Mrs. Mary E. Van Doren George, until the latter’s death on Dec. 30, 1963, at the age of 96.

Mrs. Ainge was a member of the Chaumont Presbyterian Church and had been president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Crescent Yacht Club.
