Retired Merchant Dies Sunday P.M.
Chaumont – Henry Louis George, prominent business man of this town for the past 50 years, died at his home, Washington Street, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, having suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on Thursday last.
While Mr. George had not been in the best of health for over a year, he voted Tuesday and on Wednesday was in Watertown to consult his son, Dr. Wendell D. George. On Thursday he suffered the shock which terminated his life.
Henry Louis George was born in the town of Brownville, October 22, 1860, a son of Frederick and Sabina Emerich George.
At the age of 19 Mr. George went to Watertown and entered the employ of Harbotte & Howard, general hardware merchants, plumbers and tinsmiths, to learn the trade, his brother, the late John F. George, having preceded him to Watertown to learn the same business.
Having served his apprenticeship, in 1884 he came to Chaumont, where his brother, John, had already established a hardware business in a block now standing where the Clark undertaking business is now located, and which burned to the ground in the fire of 1896.
In 1884, George Bros, with Childs McPherson, erected the block on Main Street which still contains the store. In 1926 John George retired from the business and sold his interests to Henry L. George and his oldest son, Emerich A. George. In 1929 H.L. George sold out his interest to his son and J. Worth Tuttle, who now conduct the business under the name of George Bros., a continuity of the same name for the firm for 58 years.
Mr. George was a member of the Presbyterian Church and for many years was an elder of the local church, holding that office until a few years ago.
In 1888 he was married to Miss May Hill, of Clayton, who died February 26, 1894. One daughter, Fannie Sabina George Ainge, now of Los Angeles, Calif., was born to them,
On December 25, 1895, he was married to Miss Mary Van Doren, of the town of Lyme, who survives him, as do the following children: Emerich A. George, of Chaumont; Dr. Wendell George, of Watertown, and Dr. Henry Louis George, 2nd., of Boston, Mass. He is also survived by one brother, Frederick George, of Hartford, Conn., and five grandchildren.
