Rear Admiral John M. Barrett was born Mar 14, 1920 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of John Joseph Barrett and Margaret O'Neill Barrett. After graduation from Loyola High School in Hollywood, California, he enlisted in 1938 as an apprentice seaman in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and graduated with the Class of 1943 (UNSA graduate #15675).

Admiral Barrett served as a junior officer during World War II in the Pacific on the submarines USS Halibut (SS-232) and USS Trepang (SS-412). He made nine submarine patrols. During his service, 17 Japanese combatant and merchant ships were sunk and eight others damaged.

After World War II, Admiral Barrett left the submarine community and became a naval aviator. After service in the Korean War, he served as a test pilot. He returned to submarines, serving on board the USS Sea Owl (SS-405) and then commanded the USS Tirante (SS-420). He was the first commanding officer of the submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-34). He then commanded Submarine Squadron 16 (SUBRON 16) in Rota, Spain. He commanded Submarine Flotilla One in San Diego, California.

Selected for flag rank in 1968, Admiral Barrett seved in numerous shore commands, including head of the programs branch of the Submarine Warfare Division of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Other assignments included Head, programs branch of the Submarine Warfare Division, Office of Chief of Naval Operations; Director, Plans and Programs, Polaris Special Projects Office and first U.S. Executive Secretary for the Joint US/UK Polaris Program.

Admiral Barrett was authorized to wear the Submarine Dolphins, Naval Aviator Wings and the Surface Warfare Insignia, a trio of warfare pins few officers attain the privilege to wear.

Admiral Barrett died Apr 18, 2009. He was survived by his wife and five children.
