Francis, known to friends as Frank, was born 12 January 1903 in the Borough of Manhattan, City of New York, probably in his parents' apartment, then at 332 E. 11th St., between 1st and 2nd Avenues. He was baptized 4 September 1904 as "Francesco Zazo". He was the second son of Rocco to be named Francesco. The first Francesco died in infancy in January 1902.
He was a longshoreman from about 1920 until his retirement in 1968. He married Catherine "Kit" Florence Noone on 11 May 1927 at City Hall in Manhattan. Francis and Catherine had two children, Frank J Zaza, born 4 March 1928, and Robert Nicholas Zaza, born 1 August 1932.
Frank separated from Kit in November 1938, and they formally divorced on 28 June 1965, allowing Frank to marry Anna Gentile. With Anna, he had a daughter, Barbara.
