Herbert Frederick William David came into this world as the son of Frederick and Frederika David, born to them near Orient, Faulk County, South Dakota March 18th, 1889. On May 5th of the same year he was batized by rev. Fischer. Later his parents moved to Guttenburg, Iowa. Here the desceased after attending school and receiving due instrecution was confirmed by Rev. Janzig on March 27th, 1964. After his confirmation he worked for his folkes on the farm being always a good helping hand for his parents. He then went to Denver, Colorado where he worked for about three years as engineer in a coal mine. Looking always for his chance to a better position he returned to hsi home in Postville taking up the carpenter work from which he retired about three months before his death. A short time later he sterted work as a fireman on the Milwaukee Railroad. It was his earnest aim and wish as soon as possible to become an engineer and therewith find a good life position. "But my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the lord."

Friday morning about 2:30 while on duty on a switching engine at Calmart a fast freight train ran into the engine killing him instantly. Herbert David died at the age of 28 years, 10 months, and 7 days.

He leaves to mourn his loss besides may sorrowing friends; his bereaved parents, three sisters namely Agnes and Hattie at home and Mrs. Melbert Folsom of Postville, his brother, Alfred and his little nephew Reuben at home and also numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins by whom he will be sadly missed.

"The Lord hath given and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord."

The funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church at 1 o'clock January 28th, Rev. Wappler conducting the services. Burial in the family lot in the Lutheran cemetary.
