"Detective Lieutenant Patrick R. Moloney, 64, known as the policeman with the camera eye, died at 3 a.m. Wednesday (Dec 10) at his home 0524 S. W. Texas Street. He had been ailing with a heart condition since June 25 when stricken while home.
"Lieutenant Moloney, veteran of the Portland police bureau the last 36 years, drew his appointment as a "rookie" in 1905. He wore a uniform only 18 months, being assigned to the mounted patrol of that day, and then was placed in plain clothes. Lieutenant Moloney gained coast-wide fame as a sleuth, specialized in the "bunco" detail. Life Spent Here
"Moloney was born in Portland April 12, 1877, at what now is at S.W. Broadway and Sherman Streets. He was appointed to the police force May 20, 1905. Moloney was appointed a sergeant April 30, 1912 and rose to his lieutenancy June 1, 1929.
"Lieutenant Moloney knew Portland of the early days, spending his entire life in this city. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs Patrick Moloney. His father arrived in Portland in 1855, moved to San Francisco a few years later and returned for a permanent home in 1871.
"Lieutenant Moloney is survived by the widow, Mary; one son, William P., both of Portland; a sister, Mrs. W.H. Casey, Portland, and two brothers, John, a lieutenant of police, and Thomas, of Spokane.
"Funeral Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, with burial in Mt. Calvary cemetery. The rosary will be recited at Finley's Morninglight chapel Thursday at 8 p.m."
