Benjamin was born August 17, 1840 in Ontario Canada to John and Elizabeth (Seeley) Caughell. He was a descendant of United Empire Loyalists that had to relocate to Canada from New York during or shortly after of the American Revolutionary War. He came to California at a young age in the company of his elder brothers Peter and James and likely other relatives and friends. In 1860 he was a lumberman living at Salt Point in Sonoma County in a household believed to be headed by his second cousin William Francis Caughell. Two doors away was the large family of Samuel Calvin and Sarah C. (Scott) Stewart that was later prominent in Mendocino County and northward. A letter written by one of his grand nephews, Robert Caughell, a son of Peter, quotes from the Caughell family Bible, "Benj. -- killed by the caving of a bank of the Noyo River -- Feb. 26, 1862."
