Civil War Confederate Major General. Prior to the Civil War, he was a Captain in the Union Army when he resigned his commission after the secession of the Southern States. In July 1861, he was appointed Colonel of the 9th Alabama Regiment and promoted Brigadier General in command of the 3rd Alabama, 1st Mississippi and 1st Virginia, in October. In 1862, his command suffered heavy losses at the Battle of Seven Pines, but had victory at Chancellorsville, in 1863. On the battlefield of Gettysburg, he served with distingsintion and was promoted Major General in August 1863. Placed in command of a Division of Confederate Corps in 1864, he participated in the Wilderness Battles and campaigns in Virginia until the surrender at Appomattox in 1865. After the war, he was offered a command in the Egyptian Army, but declined and was appointed chief of railroad divisions in a government department at Washington, D.C.
