J. Jacob Ranf, a Civil War Veteran, aged 87 years, died Tuesday, January 23, 1923, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bert Eustace on the Portage Road where he made his home. Mr. Ranf was born August 14, 1835 in Rimsburg, Germany coming to this country when eight years old. He was married to Lucellia Josephine Hall on May 12, 1861 at Town 66, Schroapples, New York.

Jacob Ranf enlisted and was sworn in at Lysander, New York, August 16, 1864; mustered into the 185th Regt. NY Vol. Infantry, Company A. under the command of Capt. S. O. Howard at the age of 29 years. He was promoted to Sergeant, March 29, 1865 and was wounded the same date. He mustered out with his company on May 30, 1865 near Washington, D C.. (Adj.-General Roster; 18th Regt. has listed as Rauf, see page 640).


Funeral services were held at the home on Thursday afternoon with Rev. J.W. Neville of Castile officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Silver Springs, NY at the side of his wife, Lucelia (1844-1898). The Ranf family resided in this village about thirty years ago. His son, John (Myrtle Mullen) Ranf died in 1906 and is also interred at Elmwood.
