Civil War: Company C, 2nd Vermont Infantry
Merritt A. Perham was the son of Paul N. Perham (Nov. 25, 1802, Upton, MA-1891, Dayton, NY) and his first wife, Rachael Vail (Nov. 3, 1809, Winhall, VT-Oct. 8, 1849, VT). During the Civil War Merritt enlisted as a private October 2, 1861, and was mustered into Company C, 2nd Vermont Infantry. He was later promoted to corporal. He was severely wounded in action in the Battle of the Wilderness, Virginia, on May 5, 1864, and after a lengthy recuperation was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on December 14, 1864. Corporal Perham was mustered out July 19, 1865. Merritt filed for a Civil War veteran's disability pension March 2, 1867, and received application No. 122,908 and certificate No. 97,864. He married Francis Eva Fuller in Kansas in 1875 and operated a farm in McPherson County for several years (1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 US Census; 1905, 1915 Kansas Census). Sometime after January 1920 Merritt and Eva moved to Warren, Cochise County, Arizona, to live with Alta and her husband Charles Shilling. Merritt died soon after his arrival at Warren on April 25, 1920. According to his death certificate, he died of a cerebral hemorrhage at age 76. Informant was his son-in-law, Charles Shilling. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery April 26, 1920.
