His brother, General William J. Nicholson is also buried in Arlington as is his cousin, Leonard L. Nicholson III.

He was the son of Somerville Nicholson and Hannah Jones Nicholson.
On July 5, 1877 as Reginald Fairfax Nicholson, he married Annie Ellen Heap at Washington, District of Columbia.
They were the parents of two children.
On Saturday, June 2, 1900, he married Elizabeth Code, daughter of Philip D. Code at the home of her parents at 976 Valencia Street in San Francisco. The ceremony was performed by Rev. E.B. Church.
They had no children.

Milestones. Died. Rear Admiral Reginald Fairfax Nicholson, 87, last surviving Civil War Naval officer of a heart attack in the Naval Hospital, Washington, D.C. He served as Chief Navigation Officer in 1898 of the battleship Oregon on its spectacular trip around Cape Horn to join the United States fleet off Cuba. He was one of the two naval men in history to rise from the ranks to wear an Admiral's four stars. The other was John Paul Jones.
