On Saturday, June 2, 1900, he married Elizabeth Code, daughter of Philip D. Code at the home of her parents at 976 Valencia Street in San Francisco. The ceremony was performed by Rev. E.B. Church.
They had no children.

He served as Chief Navigation Officer in 1898 of the battleship Oregon on its spectacular trip around Cape Horn to join the United States fleet off Cuba. He was one of the two naval men in history to rise from the ranks to wear an Admiral's four stars. The other was John Paul Jones.
