DIED

LEMON - At his home in Spirit Lake, Sunday, February 26th, M. W. Lemon, aged 56 years.

Thus ends the career of another of Dickinson County's old pioneers. Deceased has been a resident of this county for the past seventeen years, during which time he lived on his farm in Diamond Lake township until the past four or five years, when he moved to town owing to fast failing health.

Mr. Lemon was a kind-hearted man and a good neighbor, highly esteemed by all who knew him.

He was First Lieutenant of Company I, 14th New York Heavy Artillery. He was captured at the battle of Cold Harbor, and was an inmate of rebel prisons for ten months, escaping the third time before being successful in crossing the union lines. Shortly after reaching a union camp, he received a wound in his head by the accidental discharge of a revolver in the hands of a careless comrade. The wound destroyed the sight of one eye and finally caused his death.

A living and faithful companion, and one son and daughter, both grown, are the chief mourners.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, at 1 o'clock p.m., Rev. S. A. Winsor officiating. The burial was fittingly conducted by the Masons, deceased being a member of that order.

Twilight Lodge, A. F. & A. M., has adopted the following resolutions:

Whereas, It has pleased the Supreme Grand Master to take from our midst our beloved brother, M. W. Lemon; Therefore, be it.

Resolved, That by his death our society has lost a faithful and esteemed member, his family a kind and affectionate husband and father and the community a respected citizen and an honest man; and we tender to the bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy, and may God of our fathers take into his special care this lonely and sadly afflicted widow, comforting and healing her wounded heart, bringing to her view the silver lining of the dark, foreboding storm cloud. Be it for her.

Resolved, That these resolutions be spread upon the records of this Lodge and a copy presented to the bereaved family. Spirit Lake, Iowa, March 1st, 1888.

*Obituary is published in The Spirit Lake Beacon, March 2, 1888. [Transcribed on May 06, 2010].

Inscription

A precious one from us has gone
A voice we loved is stilled
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.

God in His wisdom has recalled
The boon his love had given
And though the body slumbers here
The soul is safe in Heaven.
