DIED

Lemon - In Cedar Rapids, September 12th, Mrs. Delia Lemon, Aged 59 years, 4 months and 6 days.

The deceased was born in Canton, St. Lawrence County, New York. In 1855 she was united in matrimony with Capt. Moses W. Lawrence. When her husband entered the Army, the devoted wife cheerfully bore the burdens which came to the wives of soldiers. After Capt. Lemon had been in a southern prison and subsequently seriously wounded, she took her place at his side in a New York hospital, caring for two children and doing a great deal for the comrades of her husband at the same time. In 1869 the family came to Dickinson county, locating on a tract of government land in Diamond Lake township, which was for many years their home. A little son aged about five years died in the pioneer days. Fond hearts were incurably wounded by the death of the bright and loving Jimmie, who in 1882 passed into eternity from an early manhood of much promise. Capt. Lemon died ten years ago, years of suffering from his old army wound having been much mitigated by the tenderness and enduring patience of the bereft companion. A little earlier Mr. and Mrs. Lemon left the farm and made a home in Spirit Lake, which has been maintained until the present time.

Mrs. Lemon has spent much time with her daughter in Cedar Rapids, But Spirit Lake was always her home, and the old neighbors were always dear to her. She was very much beloved by those who came to know her womanly worth. She was so quiet, so unassuming, so absolutely unobtrusive that by many she was unknown or comparatively unappreciated. There was to her friendship a degree of warmth and helpfulness at once rare and inestimable in human relationship. Many will testify to her unflagging loyalty and tender care-taking when hope was low and practical sympathy of priceless value. Mrs. Lemon was a woman of intelligence and character beyond the ordinary. She lived to excellent purpose and died sincerely mourned by all who realize her worthiness.

The good woman was sick for several months. She battled bravely, with the loving and thoughtful aid of her children, against a complicated ailment of the heart which could not be overcome. The chief mourners are the daughter in whose home she died, Mrs. F. L. Diserens, of Cedar Rapids, and Leslie Lemon, of lake Park.

The body arrived in Spirit Lake Wednesday morning, attended by Mr. and Mrs. Diserens, Brief services were held in the M. E. church in the afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. T. MacDonald, who spoke fittingly of the character of the deceased and of the lessons of life. The beautiful burial rites of the order of the Eastern Star were performed at Lakeview by Twilight chapter and the mortal remains were tenderly laid to rest beside those of husband and children.
