Civil War: Company B, 47th Pennsylvania Infantry
Indian Wars: Battery M, 2nd U.S. Artillery

James Hamilton was born in Pennsylvania about 1848. His father was born in Ireland and his mother in Georgia. During the Civil War James enlisted as a musician January 26, 1865, and was mustered into Company B, 47th Pennsylvania Infantry. Private Hamilton was mustered out at Charleston, South Carolina, December 24, 1865. James soon re-enlisted in the Regular Army and was mustered into Battery M, 2nd U.S. Artillery. After leaving the army James lived for a while in New York City before heading west to become a prospector and miner in Arizona Territory. He was living in Pima [now Cochise] County by 1880 (1880 US Census). James filed for a Civil War veteran's disability pension at Tombstone October 24, 1881, and received application No. 432,075 and certificate No. 265,757. He became a charter member of Tombstone's Burnside Post, Grand Army of the Republic, in January 1882. James married (1) Christine McCarthy in Cochise County in 1891 and was living with her at Courtland in May 1910 (1910 US Census). James was a widowed miner living at Courtland in January 1920 (1920 US Census). James married (2) the widow Mrs. Martha E. Nichols (maiden name unknown; 1860, IA) at Tombstone on August 17, 1922, just 4 months before his death. After his death Martha filed for a Civil War widow's pension at Douglas January 17, 1923, and received application No. 1,199,362, but died before a certificate number was issued. James did not have any children of his own.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of sixteen in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, January 26, 1865, mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. B, 47th Pennsylvania Infantry, but shortly thereafter promoted to musician. He honorably discharged with his company December 25, 1865, at Charleston, South Carolina.

The Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file claims he was a student residing in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, at enlistment and stood 5' 0" tall with light hair and blue eyes, that or the inches of height was simply omitted as often was the case. Also, ARIAS is not always accurate with regard to home locations, and he was not found with any certainty in the 1860 census. That he enlisted at the claimed age of sixteen strongly suggests he had written parental permission to do so.
