After the war, he headed west in 1869 to become one of the first pioneer settlers of this part of Lakeville township in Dickinson County, N.W. Iowa, which would later became Lake Park,Ia. John claimed & farmed 160 acres north of Silver Lake & lived there for the rest of his life. He lived in a sod dugout for first year or so until he was able to build a house. He married Martha Jeanette "Mattie" Nicol in 1871 & had 3 three children by her ( Fronia, Olive & Fern) and adopted a fourth child (Mae Dimple). He lived to age 88. His original homestead on a hilltop overlooking Silver Lake is now a century farm.
