Maude Etta Coatney was born 14 Dec 1890 in Appanoose county, Iowa, the fifth and last child born to Michael Luther Coatney and Julia Frances Jackson. Her mother died when she was only six years old, and her older sister, Bessie, effectively became her mother. In 1905 Bessie brought Maude with her to Lincoln county, Kansas, where they lived with their mother's sister, Martha Jackson Manning. On 1 Sep 1918, Maude married Paul Arnell Bartlett at Portis, Kansas, where he was working at a dry goods store. From there they moved to Colorado Springs, where Paul worked at the post office. Their only son, Dr. Max Dee Bartlett, was born there in 1927. Maude died 22 May 1945 in Colorado Springs and was buried 3 days later in Evergreen Cemetery.
