He was 25 years old when the war began and John volunteered. On April 29, 1861, he was mustered in as the orderly sergeant, also known as the 1st sergeant, of Company K, of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. This company was made up mostly of men from the Winona area.
On Nov 14, 1861, John was discharged as an enlisted man and commissioned a 2nd lieutenant of the company. On May 6, 1863, he was promoted to captain of Company F. He survived Gettysburg, but was severely wounded at Bristow Station. He was shot in the groin, the bullet tearing away one of his testes. He was sent to the hospital in Alexandria, Va, where he was expected to die. He recovered, however, but was always bothered by the wound thereafter. He returned to duty on Jan 19, 1864, and served until the regiment was mustered out on May 5, 1864.
Four months later he had accepted a commission and became the lieutenant colonel of the 11th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, to date from Sept 7, 1864, and then as colonel to date from Sept 10, 1864. His friend in the "Old First", Martin Maginnis, was commisioned major of the 11th, so they traveled together to Tennessee and their new command. They messed and lived together until the end of the war.
The muster roll of Oct, 1864, reports him on detached service, commanding the post at Gallatin, Tenn. Subsequent rolls have him present with his regiment. He was mustered out, not with the unit, but rather on an individual muster roll, on June 26, 1865. This would indicate that he was not with the unit when it was discharged.
After the war he returned to Winona. He married Emma C Lewton on Dec 27, 1865, at Utica, in Winona County, Mn. They had three children.
He was about 40 years old, when he died, on Sept 26, 1875. The cause of death was listed as pulmonary consumption (tuberculosis).
