William Wong of Boston, the Founder and Owner of Kowloon Restaurant in Saugus, died Saturday at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was 88. Born in Boston, Mr. Wong lived in Canton, China, before returning to his home city in 1939. He attended the C.C. Perkins and the Quincy School in Boston and the Pui Ching boarding school in Canton. He also studied at the New England Aircraft School. Northeastern University later awarded him an honorary degree in public service.

Mr. Wong worked as a restaurateur all his life, first for his father at Mai Fong and Sukiyaki and then, in 1950, with his wife as the founder of his own business, Kowloon Restaurant in Saugus. In the early years, Mr. Wong worked 16-hour days cooking and cleaning while his wife, formerly a saleswoman for John Hancock Life Insurance, served as waitress and hostess. Mr. Wong was later inducted into the Restaurant Hall of Fame by the Massachusetts Restaurant Association. Mr. Wong was well-known for his philanthropic deeds, which included countless food donations, the funding of scholarships and other charities. As past president of the Wong Family Association, he made the 1972 purchase of its current building and founded the scholarship fund. He also reached the adjutant level in the Shriners. He loved all the Boston sports teams and hosted many of them at his restaurant.

Mr. Wong is survived by his wife of 63 years, Madeline (Chin); two daughters, four sons, two brothers, a sister, 15 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
