John Lucian Vontress, 87, passed away suddenly on Oct. 11, 2011, at his residence in Anderson.

He was born Nov. 24, 1923, in Warren County, Ky., the son of Bennie and Donniee Vontress.

After moving to Anderson in 1950, he was baptized and joined Second Baptist Church under the late Rev. Daily. He retired from Delco Remy in 1989 after 38 years of employment and was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 662.

He enjoyed, socializing, fishing, gardening and watching football and basketball. He loved to tell a good story of the past and present; he never met a stranger who wouldn't stop and listen. He also loved to collect and wear Stetson hats and going to homecoming in Kentucky every second Sunday in June.

He leaves to cherish his memory, loving wife, Frankie (Lillard) Vontress; son, Mingo (Charlyn) Vontress; daughters, Felicia Skipper, Matoka (Eddie) Vontress-Nunn; brothers, Harold Vontress of Bowling Green, Ky., Dr. Clemmont Vontress of Washington, D.C.; sister, June (James) Edison of Bowling Green, Ky.; grandchildren, Manuelito (Royal) Skipper, Montoya Skipper, Mancha Skipper, Mankiha Skipper, April (Lionel) Barnes, Autumn Skipper, Edward Nunn, Nathan (LaShay) Nunn, Maurice Nunn, Jennelle (Darnell) Williams, John Nunn, Whitney Maxwell, Brittany Cox, Elaine Vontress, Mingo Joseph Vontress Jr., Layla Allen, Madison Vontress and Elizabeth Vontress; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held at Burnam & Son Mortuary in Bowling Green, Ky., at 1 p.m. Thursday with visitation from 11 a.m. until service. Interment will be in Vontress Cemetery, Alvanton, Ky.
