Former Staten Islander Muriel (Ladybug) Parker, 88, of Bakersfield, California, a retired nurse's aide, died Tuesday at Corinthian Gardens Nursing Home in Bakersfield.

Born Muriel Vinson in Commerce, GA, she moved to Staten Island after graduating from high school, and lived in West Brighton for more than thirty years.

Mrs. Parker worked as a nurse's aide for thirty-three years at the Staten Island Developmental Center in Willowbrook. She retired in 1987.

She had lived in Bakersfield with her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Jesse Droughn, for four years.

Mrs. Parker loved being surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who loved her dearly and enjoyed her special way of making them laugh, her family said.

She was an active member of Stapleton U.A.M.E. Church for fifty years. Among her many important roles in the church, she served as president of the Mothers Board, as a church school teacher, senior choir member, pastor's aide, in the outreach ministry with the soup kitchen, and in the Missionary Union.
In California, she worshipped at First Church of God in Christ, Camarillo.

Mrs. Parker was an energetic woman who enjoyed learning and keeping her mind busy. She was an avid reader and was known for keeping a word search handy.

When not reading, she could be found taking a brisk walk to visit her late sister, Catherine Vinson, whom she faithfully attended to for more than ten years while Ms. Vinson was in a nursing home on the Island.

Surviving, along with her daughter, Diane, are her son, Clarence Jr.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held on Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, Bakersfield.
Burial will follow.
