Benjamin was the son of Samuel Vassar of Missouri and Lydia of unknown surname, born 1844, from Iowa. May 26, 1880 he wed Jane Shinn and she bore them four children: Etta Vassar (1882, California – ); Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Vassar; Grover Cleveland "Cleve" Vassar; and Robert Lee Vassar.
The reader may note three sons with patriotic legal names that are barely known to posterity under Benjamin and Jane. There was a daughter, Etta, who might be missing just because of this...? Also, mention has been made of the family having had wooden markers.
