KERSHAW – Mrs. Mary Leigh Ussery Cicotello, 70, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at her home. A memorial service to celebrate her life is at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 15, in the chapel of Baker Funeral Home in Kershaw, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Jesse Hegler. Mary was born Aug. 20, 1942, near Kershaw and was a daughter of the late Ralph Thurston and Mary Elizabeth Haile Ussery. She was a member of Beaver Creek Presbyterian Church where she was an elder and Life Member of Presbyterian Women. She wore many hats as a Christian leader in the church including choir director, worship committee chair, Sunday school teacher, church blog manager and Presbyterian Women secretary. Before returning to Kershaw in retirement, she was active in Calvary Presbyterian Church in Marietta, Ga.
Mary was a graduate of Heath Springs High School and Winthrop College. She said her career was varied until she joined Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. in Marietta, Ga., as editor of research reports. An engineer writer, she retired after 27 years as publications coordinator.
A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Mary is survived by her husband, Carl R. Cicotello; two daughters, Cynthia McFarland and her husband, James, of Colorado Springs, Col., and Celeste Micallef Haskins of Alpharetta, Ga.; four grandchildren, Sofhia McFarland of Colorado Springs, Melyssa Micallef, Madeline Haskins and Samuel Louis Haskins of Alpharetta. She is also survived by four brothers; Patrick Ussery (Patsy), James Ussery (Patricia), Rondall Ussery (Barbara) and Charles Ussery (Pat) all of Kershaw and five sisters; Jennie Ussery of Richmond, Va., Luanne Ussery of Florence, Martha Ussery, Barbara Ogburn (Earl) and Donna Sawyer, all of Kershaw. She loved to sing, especially when she and her husband could join in special Sacred Harp (Shape Note) singings at regional locations. Mary and Carl also spent many pleasant hours fishing and canoeing along streams and lakes in South Carolina and Georgia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Beaver Creek Presbyterian Church, 1928 Kershaw Country Club Road, Kershaw, SC 29067; or to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 2039 W. DeKalb St., Camden, SC 29020. The family of Mrs. Cicotello will receive friends immediately following the memorial service at the funeral home.
