Businessman and philanthropist. He was a deaf man who was self-taught through reading. He did not have formal education but became a successful brick manufacturer and philanthropist. Through his own wealth and inheritance, he amassed a large quantity of land. He was a member of the Universalist Church who set out to establish a university in the area in 1851. He donated twenty acres of land for use to create a university that became known as Tufts University. He later donated an additional eighty acres and money for construction. He served on the Board of Trustees from 1856 until his death. In 1944, a Liberty Ship, the SS Charles Tufts, was named in his honor. Tufts University has established the Charles Tufts Society in his name for other donors to the school.
