James Henry St. John was born to Henry St. John & Mary Deyo along with his four siblings, Charles (1824), Deyo (1826), Wealthy (1828) and Hannah Elizabeth (Jan 1831). His father died in August 1830 when James Henry St. John was just 3 years old. Before his death, Henry sold his property in Ulster County New York (witnessed by his sister in law Grace Hazeltine St. John). After his death in 1830, the family Mary, the 4-5 children (Hannah was likely born in route) and Henry's brother Ebenezer and his wife Grace Hazeltine St. John moved West. It's not clear what path the family took but in 1850, Ebenezer and Grace are listed in a Federal Census in Springfield, Clark, Ohio. There is no evidence, Mary lived long enough to see her children grow up and the 5 children appear to have been raised by Ebenezer & Grace as their own.
