FLORENCE - William P. Sprague died Sunday, October 3, 2004, in Florence, SC. He was born June 10, 1918, in Parsons, Kansas. He was the son of William L. and Ada Pearl Sprague (NOTE:
He was named "Billy Perl.") He spent his childhood in Coffeyville, Kansas, and graduated from high school there. (NOTE: When he was 17, he legally changed his name to "William P." so that he could join the ROTC.)

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at Oklahoma State University where he met his future wife. He was employed by DuPont upon his graduation and served in management capacity with DuPont until his retirement in 1980. The DuPont locations where he worked were Charleston, WV, Buffalo, NY, Wilmington, DE, Clinton, IA, Circleville, OH, and Florence, SC, from 1964 until his retirement with various research assignments around the U.S. and Europe.

He was actively involved in the Boy Scouts of the Pee Dee Area Council and in Ohio beginning in 1963. He served as Scout Master Troop 477 - Florence, took troops to National Jamborees in Faragut, Idaho, and Camp. A.P. Hill, VA, and participated in the training program at the national camp in Philmont, NM. He served as President of the Pee Dee Area Council, the Camping Committee as Chairman, established a trust fund for Camp Coker and served as volunteer director of summer camp at Camp Coker. He was honored by Troop 477. He received the Silver Beaver.

He was also Advisor to the Order of the Arrow and elected to Vigil honor. He also was Area Chairman of the Camp Inspection Committee. In 2002, he received The Order of the Silver Crescent, one of the highest awards to be given by the State of SC.

Mr. Sprague is survived by his wife of 62 years, Melba; a son, James Sprague, daughter-in-law, Gloria Sprague, grandchildren, David Sprague and Amy Sprague. Also surviving him are sisters, Ethel Brandt of Englewood, CO; Carol Duvall of Coffeyville, KS; and brother, William L. Sprague of Coffeyville, OK.

He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Sprague; five brothers and a sister.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m., Thursday, October 7, 2004, in First Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
