Hobart Newell "Hob" Smith, 84, formerly of Rutland and Proctor, died August 27, 2011, at the Winchester (VA) Medical Center.

He was born in Rutland, Vermont, on November 27, 1928. He was the third son of Maude (nee Newell) and Robert Dunn Smith Sr.

Graduating in 1948 from Rutland High School and later from Rutland Junior College, he was subsequently employed by Mr. Earle Williams as the manager of "Earle & Dick's" on Mendon Mountain, and "The Wheeler Williams" (later, the "Hearthside") in Rutland.

Drafted during the Korean conflict, Hob spent two years as a staff sergeant. After his military service, he returned to Rutland and was recruited by Mr. Alva Howe, Sales Manager of the Vermont Marble Company, to work as an estimator in the Proctor office and as a salesman in the Cleveland, Ohio, office. Thus began his 48-year career with the Vermont Marble Company in various positions and through several corporate transitions. Hob retired from OMYA as a Sales Manager in 1997.

In 1953, Hob married his wife, Ann (nee Sorenson). In the ensuing years, the couple was blessed with four children: Hobart Jr. (Cheryl), Robert (Patti), Ellen (Tom), and Wendell (Lee), as well as thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Possessing a deep love and respect for the land and people of Vermont, Hob especially cherished his adopted hometown of Proctor, the shores of Lake Bomoseen, and the slopes of Killington and Pico. His family brought him great joy, and he loved to share time at the lake or a day on the slopes with his children, grandchildren, and friends.

Hob was also a longtime member of the Union Church of Proctor.

Mr. Smith was predeceased by his brothers, Robert D. Smith, Jr. and Bradford N. Smith; his nephew, Rodney N. Smith; and a precious granddaughter, Hannah McCarthy Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; his children, numerous grandchildren, his great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be at the Tossing Funeral Home on Saturday, Sept. 3, from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a brief memorial service.

Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Rutland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8515.
