Al was born in Vale, South Dakota to Nicholas and Barbara Schindler. He was the youngest of nine children: Joe, Helen, Nick, Bernie, John, Tony, Leo and Paul. The children were raised in Oregon. Growing up, Al loved the outdoors, playing with his brothers and his favorite dog, Pete. Al served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1956. During that time, he received the following medals: Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and United Nations Service Medal. In California in 1960, Al met and married his wife Isabel - he loved her very much. They had two daughters. Al worked as a carpenter for many years. His skills were advanced and far above most. He liked to travel, play and watch sports; especially, basketball and volleyball. He had a strong faith and was determined to tell everyone he met. He had a vivid imagination and was very creative. Al is now with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Isabel J. Schindler of 50 years (who passed away September 10, 2011). He is survived by his eldest daughter, Juli Schindler, his youngest daughter, Donna Schmalried, and his two granddaughters, Kristin and Kerri Schmalried.
