Jewel Christine Rakestraw, 89, New Albany, died Jan. 22, 2010 at Graceland Care Center in New Albany. She was born Dec. 8, 1920 in New Albany to the late Reliford Erskin Pickens and Beulah Coleman Pickens. She was a retired employee of Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County. She was a member of Parks Baptist Church.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010 at United Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Billy Wages and Rev. Frank Wilder officiating. Interment was in the Parks Cemetery. United Funeral Service in New Albany was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include: her husband of 73 years Wavy C. Rakestraw; 3 daughters Ruby Rakestraw, Sarah Denning (Gary), and Mary Garcia (Daniel) all of New Albany; a son Benny Rakestraw (Mabel) of New Albany; 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 children Clyde Hayes Rakestraw and an infant girl, and 2 sisters Pearl Rakestraw and Claudine Pannell.
Pallbearers were Perrin Rakestraw, Brian Denning, James Garcia, Terry McBrayer, Brett Rakestraw, Dennis Rakestraw, and Casey McBrayer.
Visitation was from 5 until 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010 at the funeral home.
