Rosita Hammer Arcade: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice

Intelligencer, The (Doylestown, PA) - Saturday, May 11, 2013
Deceased Name: Rosita Hammer Arcade

Rosita Hammer Arcade Mercedes Rosita Ortega Hammer Arcade died peacefully on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at her home.

Rosita's parents were from Barcelona, Spain, but came to the United
States, where her father worked in New Jersey. An older sister, Pilar, was born in 1916 and Rosita was born in 1917. When she was four, the family moved to Bridgeport, Conn., where they lived across the street from Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, where Rosita played and danced. She began taking classical dance lessons that year. After a stay in Brooklyn, where she took Spanish dance lessons, the family returned to Barcelona in 1929. After a series of misfortunes, the family became dependent on Rosita's dance talent to support the family.

Always accompanied by her mother, Rosita danced in Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, and then Havana, where she met Paul Whiteman. She danced at the Copa Cabana in Brazil. In 1936, Russia invaded Spain, but with some difficulty, she was able to return to New York, where she danced at the Roxy Theater and Radio City Music Hall, sharing the program with Janet Gaynor, Douglas Fairbanks and Ginger Rogers. She danced on Broadway and in the summers, in Chicago.

In 1938, she was chosen by George Ballanchine to dance the role of the gypsy in the Metropolitan Opera production of 'Carmen.' She was 21. Rosita danced at the Met for several more years.
In Central Park, she was noticed by an older man riding his horse. He found out who she was and came to all her performances at the Havana Madrid. Rosita married Louis Hammer in 1941. However, at that time, the war was on and they felt threatened living on the 16th floor, so they moved to Bucks County, buying Grandview Farm; the mansion and stables at that time were the gateway to Bucks County.

Rosita and Lou had their daughter, Louise, in 1942. Louise now lives in Texas. Her daughter, Susan, is mother to Lauren; her son, Tyler, is the father of Hailey and Zachary. Rosita and Lou's second daughter, Laura, was born in 1951 and is married to Rick Happ. Their daughter, Emily Rose, was named after her grandmother. They live in Ottsville.

Lou died in 1968. Rosita married again to Steve Arcade, who unfortunately died a few years later.

Rosita worked for years at Ann Stanley's, Musselman's and then at Lancaster Dress Company. She was active with the State Street Players.

Even at the end of her life, her feet never stopped dancing to the music. This graceful little girl, who supported her family through the Great Depression, became a graceful woman and mother and friend. If you ever hear the Gypsy's Song from 'Carmen' on the radio, stop and think of Mercedes Rosita Ortega.
