OBITUARY: Nancy Nelson Donahoe (1932-2006)
Nancy Donahoe was born September 21, 1932, in Virginia, Minnesota, and died Thursday, June 8, 2006, at Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior, Wisconsin.
She trained as a medical technician at Northwest Institute of Technology in Minneapolis from 1950-1956. She worked at Lakeland Medical Center, Wilmar, Minn.; Itasca Memorial Hospital, Grand Rapids; Rico Memorial Hospital, Wilmar; Dr. Philip Bray in the Medical Arts Building, Duluth; and St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth. She also worked part-time coordinating volunteers at Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior.
Nancy married Richard R. Hoff on July 16, 1955, in Marshall, Minn., and had two daughters, Ginger and Judy. She married Edward J. Donahoe on August 28, 1971, in Duluth, and added five more children to her family, John, Cathy, Terry, Patty, and Margaret.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Herman and Minerva (McKusick) Nelson; son, John Edward Donahoe (d.1992); and her beloved Sheltie, “Reggie.”
Survivors include her son, Michael “Terry”Donahoe, Circle Pines, MN; daughters, Catherine (Thomas) Preusser, Holmin, WI, Patricia (Michael) Baumann, St. Cloud, MN, Virginia Butterworth (Andy Ziegler), Sioux Falls, SD, Judith (Eric) Loos, Bakersfield, CA, and Margaret (Matthew Hetzel) Donahoe; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Carl Nelson, Phoenix, AZ and Lutsen, MN; her angel here on earth, Pat Schmolke, Superior; and her faithful companions, “Sandy” and “Holly,” her Shelties.
Nancy was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior, and was instrumental in starting Cursillo in the Superior Diocese.
The visitation will begin a 5 p.m. Sunday, June 11th at Downs Funeral Home, corner of Ogden Avenue and North 19th Street, with a scripture service at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, June 12th at Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior, with Rev. Leon Flaherty as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Superior.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made in Nancy’s name to St. Mary’s Hospice or the Cathedral Organ Fund.
