She was born July 7, 1916, in Reserve, Kan., to Clarence and Nora Murphy. She was a direct descendent of Chief Black Hawk and a member of the Iowa Tribe of Kansas Nebraska. Esteline was sent to Indian boarding school and spent her childhood in Brown County, Kan.
She married her sweetheart, George Nelson Foster in Hiawatha, Kan., on Aug. 9, 1936. Esteline gave birth to her first son, Gary Foster in 1939 and then the family moved to Southern California, where she gave birth to John Foster in 1941. Esteline and George spent the rest of their lives together in southern California.
They enjoyed traveling and visiting relatives, including Gary and his family who moved to Helena in 1967. After 63 years of marriage, George passed away in 1990. Esteline enjoyed gardening, dressing up and homemade pie.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Rita Foster of Helena and John and Stephanie Foster of Diamond Bar, Calif.; grandchildren, Lance and Lisa Foster; Brandi Foster, Amber and Scott Ireland of Helena; Garth and Gloria Foster of Ronan; Bryan Foster of western Washington; Candace, Mike Murangi and John Foster, JR. of Diamond Bar and three handsome great-grandsons, Eamonn; Dempsey and Mikey. A memorial Mass will be said for her at St. Helena Cathedral on Saturday Nov. 11 at 9 a.m.
