Springfield - Martha Sue McElveen Chance, 85, died Friday, October 1, 2004, at her residence. She was born February 7, 1919, in Bulloch County to the late W. Linton and Susie Rushing McElveen. Mrs. Chance received her BS degree in education from the University of Georgia. She taught in Laurens and Effingham County High schools for 27 years and retired in 1976. She was the first home economics teacher in Effingham County.

She was a member of Springfield United Methodist Church, a charter member of the United Methodist Women, a member of the Dorcas Circle and a member of the Travelers. Mrs. Chance was a life member of the Retired Teachers of Georgia and a member of Effingham Chapter of Retired Teachers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Chance Jr.; son, George A. Chance III; brother, Lenwood McElveen; and sister, Grace Corthell.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Linda Sue and Peter Newiger of Smyrna; a nephew, Dr. Alvin McElveen of Bradenton, Fla.; a niece, Cindee Kueny of Dallas, Texas; two great-nieces, Elizabeth McElveen of Bradenton, Fla., and Emily Kueny of Dallas, Texas; a sister-in-law, Joyce McElveen of Brooklet; a brother-in-law, Richard Corthell of St. Simons Island; and a special friend, Eva Mae Rivers of Springfield.

The funeral service will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Springfield United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Brooklet City Cemetery. Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home
