After several years or failing health. Mrs. Frank Stark, one of the Traer community's finest persons, was taken by death at her home in southwest Traer Tuesday evening, November 3, 1953. She had been an invalid several years and had been bedfast most of the time during the last year. But she was mentally keen until the last days. She was born Margaret Cunningham Maxwell, in southeast Perry township on January 23, 1872, the eldest of the seven children of Charles and Mary McDowell Maxwell, early settlers of Tama county. She was graduated from Traer high school with the class of 1890 and was a teacher several terms in rural schools of Tama county. She attended business college in Dos Moines until her mother's death, when she returned to assist in making a home for her younger sisters and brothers.
She was united in marriage to Frank M. Stark on December 16, 1896, and they made their home on the farm now occupied by their son, Robert, until the death of her husband in November, 1935. Mr. Stark was one of the community's top farmers. She is survived by seven children: Mary (Mrs. F. C. ) Earley, Dorothy (Mrs. Thomas) McEwen, and Robert, all of Traer; Esther (Mrs. Harold) McComb, of Columbia, Missouri; Kenneth, of Des Moines; Margaret (Mrs. David) Keith, of Hudson; and Eleanor (Mrs. Paul) Schelp, of Detroit, Michigan. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Ward Lewis, of Mechanicsville, Indiana, and Mrs. Agnes Shafer, of Newton, Iowa; and three brothers, John Maxwell, Riceville, Iowa; Gilbert Maxwell, of Wessington Springs, South Dakota, and Frank Maxwell, of Carrizozo, New Mexico. One brother, Andrew Maxwell, preceded her hi death in May of this year. Her sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren have been a source of great Interest and enjoyment.
Her home and church were always foremost in Mrs. Stark's life. She became a member of the Tranquillity Presbyterian church, near Traer, in girlhood, and retained her membership there until her dentil. Mrs. Stark was deeply interested in the mission schools of her church. The family requests that no flowers be sent. Friends who desire may share in a memorial gift, a scholarship to be established by the Tranquillity Missionary society.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon at Tranquillity church. The casket will not be opened at the church. Friends may call at the States Funeral Home until 10 a. m. Friday, or at Mrs. Stark's home, where the casket will be taken until the time of the service. The Rev. Oliver Stevenson, pastor will conduct the services. Mrs. Burdell Staker will sing accompanied at the piano by Kay McMillan, Casket bearers will be roger and Craig Stark, Bernard and Douglas Keith, Richard McEwen and John McComb. Burial will be in Buckingham cemetery.
