Mrs. Julia Gaffney

The community lost another of its esteemed pioneer mothers Saturday evening, when death came to Mrs. Julia Gaffney. Although Mrs. Gaffney had been failing in health for two years, she was never complaining. During the last weeks when medical science and loving hands could do nothing to stay the disease, she was ever resigned to God's will and suffering little, she gradually weakened until the end. A kind neighbor, a good Christian woman, a loving mother is gone.
Mrs. Julia Gaffney, daughter of Martin and Bridget Mackey, was born Oct. 10, 1861, at Lucan, Ontario, Canada. She moved with her parents to Dubuque at the age of 4 years. When 10 years old, with her parents she came in a covered wagon in the spring of 1871 to Cedar township, Greene county, where she grew to womanhood.
On January 9, 1884, she was united in marriage to James J. Gaffney. To them were born ten children, five of whom preceded her in death as follows: Patrick, age two on March 15, 1888; Joseph, Dec. 5, 1915; Stephen, Nov. 17, 1918; Magnus, Jan 27, 1919. Her husband James M. Gaffney, passed away on June 12, 1929.
With her husband and family she resided on their farm seven miles southwest of Lohrville in Cedar township, Greene county, until the spring of 1920 when they retired to Lohrville where she passed away Saturday, Feb. 23.
She leaves to mourn their loss, three daughters: Mrs. Bridget Dowling, Mrs. Veronica Kavanough, Mrs. Mary Burke, all of Lohrville; two sons: George A. Gaffney of San Bernardino, Cal., and Clarence F. Gaffney of Lohrville: 28 grandchildren, one great grandchild; two sisters: Mrs. Temperance Hoolihan of Jefferson and Mrs. Winifred Mahoney of Omaha.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's church. Rev. Costello officiating at the service and the last rites at the grave.
Her remains were laid to rest in St. Joseph's cemetery beside those of her husband and sons. Pallbearers were six grandsons: Louis Dowling, Martin Gaffney, Edward Kavanough, Patrick Burke, James Gaffney and Joseph Dowling. Assisting in the sanctuary were Ezra and Lawrence Bonner.
Those attending from out-of-town were Mrs. Ambrose Mackey and son, Ambrose, and daughter, Helen of Mitchell, S.D.,; Mrs. Winifred Mahoney and daughter, Mrs. Fred Widstrup, and son, George Mahoney of Omaha; Mrs. Posner and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hatton of Des Moines; Miss Lucille Gaffney and Mrs. Jennie Wheeler of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Ed Marley of Milford; Mr. and Mrs. Martin McGee of Jackson, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Wm.
