Born 13 Jan 1889 Cottonwood Falls, Chase Co., KS. Son of Minnie (HAZEL) & Judge Dennis MADDEN of Emporia, Lyon Co., KS
Died from wounds 1 Nov 1918 at 12:50 pm in Base Hospital #54 at Mesves, France following multiple and severe gunshot wounds to the left thigh and right leg sustained on Oct 3, 1918 in the initial phases of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. His right leg and thigh was amputated on Oct 26 but the remaining limb developed a severe infection, including gas gangrene, and Cpl. MADDEN died Nov 1. Since arriving in France, MADDEN had participated in 6 campaigns including the Aisne defense, Chateau-Thierry, Champagne-Marne defensive, Aisne-Marne Offesive, St Mihiel Offensive and finally the Meuse-Argonne Offensive during which he was severely wounded, as described above.
Originally buried in the Base Hospital Cemetery, remains re-interred at the St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France Plot: Row 2 Grave 7.
