Husband of Martha Jennie Carden. Son of Samuel Carden and Charlotta Tundsrain.
From Obituary in Augusta Eagle:
"Mr. Johnson was first associated in the newspaper work, with the pioneer newspaperman, H. N. Wheeler, who became widely known throughout western Illinois. He first became associated with Mr. Wheeler at Elgin, Ill., later accompanying him to Quincy, where Mr. Wheeler for many years edited the Quincy Herald and later the Quincy Journal. Mr. Johnson, not only contributed to the news columns of those papers, but likewise efficiently served as advertising manager. In all, he was associated with Mr. Wheeler, for twenty-five years.
For eight years he served as advertising manager for Dr. Kurts, in Kansas City, Mo., meeting with success. Later he returned to Quincy, spending three years in the Quincy Stock Food business. This busy life, however, knew the joy of romance and companionship, for on February 28, 1888, he was happily united in marriage with Miss Jennie Carden, at the home of her mother in Birmingham, Ill. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, during their happy life together, have enjoyed extensive travel, have known many delightful experiences in the travels that have taken them from coast to coast. They counted among their friends many notables with whom Mr. Johnson's newspaper work brought them in close contact...
he became directly associated with this paper as editor, a capacity he filled commendably, and to the deepest satisfaction of the entire community as well as the owner and publisher of the Eagle. His clever, original style of writing not only brought the Eagle a hot of friends, but likewise created many friendships for Mr. Johnson, whose personality has ever been outstanding."
