Dorothy E. Horne

Dorothy E. Horne, age 89, of Tampa, FL. passed away at Haven Hospice Suwannee Valley Care Center in Lake City, FL. on March 31, 2015 following a brief illness.

Dorothy was born in Tampa, FL. on June 7, 1925 to the late Claude Judson Horne and Ruby Wynn Horne. She lived most of her childhood in Hamilton County on the family farm. When times would get tough her father would load the family up and go where there was work but always seemed to end up back on the farm. Dorothy was one of six children and they all learned the value of hard work. Her father gave her a small plot of tobacco to care for and she always said some of her best financial training came from that experience. Her early childhood education was between Tramroad and Green School. She enjoyed the learning process and worked her way up through high school and on to Florida State College for Women and later the University of Tampa.

She taught second-grade in Raiford for five years, thirty two years in Hillsborough County School System and one year in Japan for a total of thirty eight years of teaching. It never really ended for her as she was constantly educating her nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews through the mail and on visits home.

It was said of Dorothy, that it was evident that she enjoyed her life, made many dear friends, deeply appreciated the values taught by her parents and relatives, and never felt poor in spite of the hardships and demanding work that went into achieving her goals. She loved her church and was dedicated to helping those in need at the Florida Baptist Children’s home in Lakeland, FL. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, brothers, Bobby and Russell Horne and her sister, Alethia Williams.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 2, 2015 at Corinth Cemetery near Jasper, FL.
Visitation with the family will begin at 1:00 p.m. Thursday in the sanctuary at Corinth Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Florida Baptist Children’s Home P.O. Box 8190, Lakeland, FL. 33802
