W.P. "Red' Hogan, 93, long-time business and civic leader in Rockdale, was born at Bells, Texas, son of J.J. and Lilly (Washburn) Hogan. He graduated from Bells High School and North Texas Normal (now the University of North Texas) and taught school, coached and was a principal at Bells.
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, attaining the rank of captain. It was before his military service that, while traveling a territory as a representative with a tire company, he met and married Rockdale native Billie Gaither and joined his father-in-law, W.E. Gaither, in the Gaither Motor Co. dealership.
Mr. Hogan served as Rockdale mayor during the town's "Alcoa boom years." He also served many years on the school board and served as its president.
He was a charter member of Rockdale Country Club and Rockdale Noon Lions Club and was the founder and secretary of the Rockdale Gun Club, an outgrowth of his love of hunting and fishing.
He served numerous terms as a Chamber of Commerce director and was a past president. He was also a member of the Rotary Club and the American Legion and VFW posts, was a former owner of KMIL radio in Cameron, and was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 414 AF&AM, was a member of the Bells Masonic Lodge, and was a member of the Austin Ben Hur Shrine Temple.
He and Billie Gaither were married December 25, 1939 in Rockdale. She preceded him in death and in November, 1989 he married Ruth Wallace who also predeceased him. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Lonnie Hogan, and sisters Lydia Woodson and Lorene Moore.
Mr. Hogan died on a Saturday morning at Richards Memorial Hospital. He was self employed and still active in business at the time of his death, operating Hogan Enterprises and Hogan Insurance Agency. He was former owner of Gaither Motor Company, a Ford-Mercury dealership in downtown Rockdale, and also was Rockdale's Texaco consignee. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Septtember 1 at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home. Burial followed in the IOOF Cemetery. The Rockdale Reporter, September 2, 2004
