Anna Helen Hill Henderson Howard, a native of Huntington, Utah, passed away on July 29, 2005 in Elko, Nev., at the age of 80. Helen was born to loving parents Effie Olivia Armstrong and Dr. Thomas Clark Hill on Dec. 13, 1924 in Huntington, and lived most of her life near Arimo, Idaho.
After 14 years of marriage, Helen's parents greeted their only child with great joy, but Effie's pleasure was short-lived, for she passed away in 1928. After Effie's death, her mother, Ane Kristine Olsen Christensen Armstrong, an Ephraim resident who emigrated from Denmark in 1867, spent each school year in Huntington caring for Helen and managing Dr. Hill's house. Helen was also nurtured by loving aunts, Ane Kristine's daughters Nancy Armstrong Stanford and Gracie Armstrong Edwards.
Ane took Helen across the mountains to her home in Ephraim each summer, where Helen made many friends. Helen's circle of lifelong friends includes Bertie-Mart Grange, Madge Johnson, Lila Wilson, and Willis Hart Howard. Helen graduated as valedictorian in the Class of '42 from North Emery High school in Huntington.
That fall she matriculated at the University of Utah to pursue a teaching degree. There she joined the Delta Gamma sorority and lived in the Delta Gamma house. She met her future husband, Robert "Bobby" Smith Henderson, of Arimo, Idaho in chemistry class. Bobby joined the 13th Army Air Corps and left for the Pacific Theatre in January, 1943. Helen transferred to the all-girls Mills College in Oakland, California, where she could often visit her Aunt Gracie across the bay in San Carlos.
Helen married Bobby on Sept. 4, 1945 in Santa Ana Calif. She returned to Mills College to receive her bachelor's degree in June 1946. They then settled on the Henderson Ranch west of Arimo, Idaho where they spent almost 50 years farming and raising cattle. Helen developed a loving relationship with her in-laws, Robert W. and Winafred Smith Henderson, of Arimo, both of whom predeceased her.
Helen loved being a mother to their two sons, Robert and Tom and often took them to visit relatives in Utah. Helen and Bobby enjoyed visiting friends and family across the world, and also enjoyed the companionship of their many friends and relatives who often visited or worked on the ranch.
Helen taught in the Marsh Valley School District in Bannock County, Idaho, for over 40 years. After Bobby died in 1993, Helen married her childhood sweetheart, Willis Hart Howard, in 1998. They divided their time between her ranch at Arimo and his ranch at Spring Creek, Nev.
The family is eternally grateful for the loving care and companionship Willis gave Helen in her later years.
