From Holland St. John - "Charles was born to Jeremiah and Sarah Elenor (Parks) Givens in December of 1849. His parents were young newlyweds and had established a farm in Marrs Township, Posey County, Indiana adjacent to Charles's grandparents farm (Rachel Jones Givens, widow of state senator Thomas J. Givens) and his uncle's farm (Thomas Jefferson, Jeremiah's older brother). Also farming nearby was his mother's parents (Daniel G. and Mary Miller Parks). When his parents decided to sell their farm and take the overland trek to California in 1853, Charles was presumably left in Indiana, or if he joined his parents and other Givenes making the journey, he may have returned with an uncle, Jackson Givens in 1854. In any event, by 1860 Charles was living in Black Township, Posey County, with Ezekiel and Percilla Jones. Ezekiel was the son of his grandmother Rachel's brother (David Jones). On August 29, 1875, Charles married Mary Ann "Mollie" Burlison. She was born on November 30, 1856, a daughter of Eletha Ann (Albright) and the Reverend Adam Hampton Burlison. They had five chldren: Pleasant Greene, David, Nora and Cora (twins), and Alvin. Greene was born August 25, 1879; David was born May of 1882; Nora and Cora died in infancy; Alvin was born August 5, 1886 and died in childhood. In 1880, Charles and Mollie owned ten acres with three horses, one milk cow and two other cattle. Mary Ann died August 15, 1886 and was buried in Bufkin Cemetery in Posey County. The 1880 U S Census reveals this information about Charles and his family: he was 31 years of age, married to Mollie Givens (listed as being 21 years old), a farmer, has been unemployed, he can read but can't write, she can do both. They were both born in Indiana, and they had one son living at home: Greene Givens, age 9/12 (nine months old). After Mollie's death, Charles married (2) Nora Thomas on July 26, 1891 and their first child, Hattie B., was born May 31, 1892. Pleasant Green and David apparently lived with their grandfather A. H. Burlison at this time. Charles and Nora were divorced on December 9, 1893 and were remarried on March 24, 1894. The action was dismissed on February 23, 1895, although the marriage continued to be a troubled one. Charles and Nora were separated when Charles died on February 7, 1897 of "LaGrippe" (influenza)at his home east of Mount Vernon. Family tradition has Charles buried next to his first wife and children in the Bufkin Cemetery but their gravesites have never beed located."
